As you know, we have just finished the second year of AKC licensing of derby trials at the six federations. As a reminder, the purpose of working with the AKC to license the derby events was to increase entries at the federations.
In 2018 a total of 397 derbies were entered in the six federations which was an increase of 21 over 2017. In 2019, there were 436 derbies entered in the six federations which was an increase of 39 over 2018 and 60 over 2017. It appears that we are going in the right direction.
In addition to the licensing, ABBA started a $2,000 derby award program which provides $500.00 to the winner of each class. This money was donated by beaglers and was not paid for with dues. ABBA will sponsor the award in 2020. If any of you wish to help by donating please let me know. A special thanks to those that donated and to the beaglers who entered dogs at the trials. The winners this year are:
13" Male Bare Down Slim Jim-Owner, Scott Lynch
15" Male Play Time Majican-Owners, Bryan Frye & Joel Davis
13" Female Bee Lick Aja-Owners, Marty Parker & Niki Happel
15" Female Steeler Town Solo, Owners, Niki Happel & Marty Parker
The 2019 overall Purina Derby Award winner is Bare Down Slim Jim. The owner will receive $500.00 cash, $250.00 travel expenses to the National Banquet, plus, one night lodging and twelve bags of Purina dog food. The handler will receive $250.00 cash, $250.00 travel expenses to the National banquet, plus one night lodging and six bags of dog food....all provided by Purina.
A special thanks goes to the federation officers and the host clubs. You all do a great job making the events successful and enjoyable. Another key important person in the federations is Mike Luchetta. Mike is our liaison with Purina and he does a great job for Purina while looking out for our sport. Thanks, Mike.
I hope we can all work together to make the 2020 federations bigger and better.
