Federation Derby Awards
June 13, 2018

Article by Lynette Coil

Now that all six brace beagle federations are finished, it is time to look back and decipher what happened and was it good or bad for our sport.  All beaglers are concerned about our future.  As we know, we need to do our best to increase derby entries. Two things that were implemented in 2018 were designed to increase derby entries at the federations.  Many of us felt that getting the AKC to license the derby trials at the six federations would increase entries.  In addition, ABBA sponsored a derby awards program that would pay $500.00 to each of the derbies that won and placed the most at the six federations derby events.  The winner of each class was determined the same way that the Purina futurity winners are selected.

The question now is did these two programs help increase derby entries? Well, let's see...

                                                        2017                                      2018

Midwestern                                     88                                       86

Mid Dixie                                          67                                        80

Heartland                                        53                                        59

Eastern                                              64                                        65

International                                   56                                       65

North Eastern                                 44                                       42

                                        Total.........376                  Total...... 397

As you can see, derby entries increased by 21.  While this is not a big improvement, it is an improvement!  In my opinion, the increase would have been larger if we did not have to move the Midwestern and the weather issues were not a factor.

The four ABBA Derby Winners are:

13" Males-BREATH TAKER BROCK-OWNER-COLT ALLEN

15" Males-LITTLE EASE SON OF SAM-OWNERS-JOEL DAVIS & BRYAN FRYE

13" Females-STEELER TOWN BOOMIN BUSINESS-OWNERS-NIKI HAPPEL & MARTY PARKER

15" Females-R&R MONIQUE-OWNERS-STEVE & SHAWN REDMON

In addition, each dog owner will receive a check for $500.00 and will be presented a plaque at the Purina/Hall of Fame banquet at the National in Pittsburgh in October.

A special thank you goes to all beaglers who had derbies and entered them in one or more federations.  Hopefully, all of us will find a derby for 2019.  If there are no derbies, there will not be futurities and all age brace dogs in the future.  We also owe a thanks to the eleven beaglers who donated $200.00 each to go toward the ABBA derby awards.  If enough beaglers will donate for 2019 we will do it again.

Thanks,

Russ Arend, ABBA President
