Surefoot Sherry, owned by Justus Ammons of North Carolina and handled by Bob and Lynette Coil, won the thirteen inch bitch class this afternoon at Detroit Beagle Club. Sherry put on two fine runs in both first and second series to claim the win. She was sired by Field Champion Dan Art’s Mr. James and her dam is Field Champion Surefoot Sylvia II.
During first series Sherry ran with Tilley’s Happy in the fourth brace. She ran the front with authority and was named high hound in second series. Tilley’s Happy came back third in second series on the strength of her fine first series run from the back. She is owned by Neil Roberts and was handled by Ed White.
In second series Surefoot Sherry was braced with Gillum’s Courtyard Lilac in the high brace. The two little hounds put on a fine run, trailing the rabbit down a path and around the corner without any problem. Apparently the rabbit made a quick jump into the cover and the hounds pulled the brace out of the fire when they came up with the rabbit after a long check.
Lilac captured a second in the trial to finish for her AKC Championship. She needed nine points to finish and ended up with ten as there were twenty hounds entered in the competition. Six hounds were called back for second series.
Dan Bay and Dick Cantor from Ohio judged the trial and did a fine job sorting out the hounds.
The weather was very pleasant and a welcomed relief from the hot, sticky conditions that have plagued Michigan for the past month or so. Rabbits came with ease and the club was in top condition with beautifully mowed paths.
The Detroit trial ends tomorrow when the fifteen-inch females run.
Second Series-13" Females:
1. Surefoot Sherry (1st) vs. Gillum's Courtyard Lilac (2nd).

3. Char-Line Miss Gwynn (D-2) (NBQ) vs. Surefoot Adrea (4th).
Third Series:
1. Tilley's Happy vs. Surefoot Andrea.
