The nation was shocked a number of years ago to read that four pilots, who were a part of the Thunderbirds, the U. S. Ċir Force's demonstration team, had driven their aircraft into the Nevada desert. All Four were killed.
If a single plane had crashed one might easily suspect pilot or equiptment failure. But all four? The question "Why?" arises naturally under such circumstances. Has the Bermuda Triangle moved inland? Did some great supernatural force hurl the planes to the earth? Were the minds of these exceptionally sharp young men blinded by some ominous force, perhaps wielded by an enemy of our country?
I suspect that the explanation for this tragic accident will prove to be much less spectacular. I believe that we shall learn when the investigation is completed that one of the planes crashed because of pilot error or equipment failure and that the remaining three pilots died because they were following the Leader.
For a team of this kind the coordination of movement is crucial; therefore, the pilots draw their cues primarily not from the instruments before them or the horizon about them but from the movements of their leader. When the Leader's movements are correct the result is an amazing demonstration of precision flying. When the Leader errs the result can be--and probably was--death!
God has placed before us a Leader who calls to us. "Come unto Me...follow me..." His name is Jesus. He is the Son of God. His personal life, which He calls us to imitate, was flawless. His personal ldeadership is withour error. If we keep our eyes fixed on Christ He will lead us happily through the days of our lives and safely into eternity.
And the result of our individually trusting and following Christ will be not only our personal peace and joy, but an amazing demonstration in coordinated living as well!
