I was talking recently with a woman who was distressed because her son, who lives nearby, never calls or visits her unless he needs something. He’ll stop by if he wants her to iron one of his shirts or fix one of his favorite meals. He’ll call if he needs to borrow money. Otherwise he virtually ignores this one who loves him and gave him life. When confronted about his arrogant treatment of his mother by another member of the family the youg man protested, “But I believe in her!”

This fictitious story illustrates the way many today treat God! They contact Him only when they have some need, but otherwise live as if a mutual non-agression treaty is in place etween them and the One who gave them life.

If such are confronted about their ignoring the God who made them for His own purposes, they might well respond “Well, I believe in God!”

God is no more satisfied that people should merely ackinowledge His existence than the mother in my story. He desires--no, He demands--the love, the respect and the obedience of those made in His image. God calls all people to a personal relationship with Himself through Jesus Christ.

To acknowledge the existence of God is not the end but merely the beginning of the faith that is able to save our souls and give joyful substance to life. Lets be sure that we who say that we believe in God walk with God!
