As I write these words the sun is shining, the temperature is warm, and there is a definite hint of spring in the air. As you read them that hint will have become a reality.
What a marvelous season spring is, particularly for those of us who have spent the winter in Michigan. The crunch of snow beneath our feet has been replaced by the songs of birds in the trees. The leaden gray skies have become bright blue. We who have not looked up for months rediscover the heavens. All around us trees that once seemed dead show new signs of vibrant life.
As wonderful as all of this must be for those who do not share out faith it is even more wonderful for us as Christians. This warming of creation reminds us of that change made within us by the grace and power of God. The Bible speaks of our passing from darkness into light and from death to life. We look around us, we remember the goodness of God, and we rejoice!
And it is surely no coincidence that in this transition time we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Like the earth in winter He was dead, buried, and His forlorn followers had no hope. But then came the exciting, almost unbelievable news that "He is not here, He has risen!"
The joy of the resurrection for Christians is akin to the happiness of spring for non-believers. Here, contrary to our experience and hopes, is triumpant life. The joy of Easter transcends our celebration of the victory of Christ. Our joy is found in the confidence that His victory is our victory.
