The following question was addressed to me by Buddy Beam of Knoxville, Tennessee. Since it is not a breeding item I would like to receive and then post the responses I receive from you, the beagling public, on this subject. Please send in your responses and I will post them. I believe we can all benefit from the responses I receive and then post.
Traning Derbies.
Mr. Gillum,
I would like for you to comment on training derbies. I have heard successful beaglers make the statement that a person would out train you. Larry Adams used this expression when writing about General Myrick in the May 2003 issue of Hounds and Hunting.
What are some of the methods used to properly train a young hound, rather than just putting the hound on the line and letting it go?
Some questions that come tom mind are as follows: (1) Do you start the young dog with an older dog? If so, when is the dog soloed? (2) Do you work the young dog on a lead to keep it on the line? If so how much or to what extent? (3) When is the young dog braced? (4) How much and how long do you work the young hound?
